The Real Return on Investment: What Financial Freedom Buys Beyond Money

When we talk about building wealth, we often focus on the numbers. How much money is in your savings account? How many investment properties do you own? What’s your net worth? How much are you earning? And while those numbers matter, I’ve learned something over the years.

The greatest return on investment isn’t always measured in dollars. Sometimes, it’s measured in moments.

I was reminded of this recently during my girls trip to Puerto Rico, where my girlfriends and I celebrated 10 years of friendship. There were coordinated outfits, sunset adventures, plenty of laughter, a few cocktails, and memories that I’m certain we’ll be talking about for years to come.

But somewhere between the celebrations and the conversations, I found myself reflecting on what financial freedom really means to me.

It wasn’t about how much the trip cost. It was about having the freedom to experience it.

My Journey to Living Freely

In 2014, I took my first solo trip to Puerto Rico. That same year, I reached a personal milestone of financial freedom and made one of the most important decisions of my life.

I decided to start investing in myself.

I wasn’t going to wait for someone to travel with me, give me permission, or tell me when it was the right time to start enjoying my life.

That decision changed everything.

Twelve years and 27 countries later, I’ve learned lessons about money, business, relationships, and myself that no classroom could have taught me.

And returning to Puerto Rico in 2026, this time surrounded by women I love, reminded me just how valuable those early financial decisions were.

Money Is a Tool. Time Is the Real Currency.

Here’s something I want you to think about.

What good is building wealth if you never create the space to enjoy the life you’re working so hard for? We spend years working overtime, chasing promotions, building businesses, and accumulating assets. And sometimes, in the process, we forget what we were working toward in the first place. For me, financial freedom has never been about simply becoming wealthy.

It’s about having choices.

The choice to travel.

The choice to spend time with my daughter and granddaughter.

The choice to pursue work I’m passionate about.

The choice to give back to my community.

And sometimes, the choice to simply do nothing without feeling guilty.

That’s the real return on investment.

Build Wealth, But Don’t Forget to Live

Now, don’t misunderstand me. I’m still going to encourage you to budget, eliminate debt, save, and invest. After all, that’s what I teach! But I also want you to create a financial plan that includes enjoying your life.

Put the vacation in the budget.

Start the travel fund.

Plan the girls' trip.

Take the family vacation.

Celebrate the milestone.

You don’t have to choose between building wealth and making memories. You simply have to be intentional about both. And remember, financial freedom doesn’t mean spending without limits. It means creating the financial stability and flexibility to make choices without jeopardizing your future.

What Does Freedom Look Like to You?

Your version of financial freedom may look nothing like mine.

Maybe it’s leaving a job that no longer serves you.

Maybe it’s having enough savings to take three months off.

Maybe it’s buying your first home, helping your parents retire, or simply paying your bills without anxiety.

Whatever it looks like, I encourage you to stop measuring your financial success only by what you’ve accumulated. Start measuring it by the life you’re creating. Because at the end of the day, we aren’t just building wealth to have more. We’re building wealth to LIVE more.

So here’s my challenge to you this month:

Ask yourself, “If money weren’t an issue, what would I do with my time?”

Then start building a financial plan that moves you closer to that life.
